As a result of the population exchange program between Greece and Turkey, Kayakoy was abandoned. With its narrow streets and silent houses it is now a symbol of peace and friendship between the Greek and Turkish nations. The city called Levissi was built on the ancient city of the Lycian Karmilassos. There are 3500 or 4000 houses located on the hills and no one obscures the view of the other. The houses are hardly larger than 50 sqm and each had a cistern where they collected rainwater during the winter. Besides the houses, there are two churches, a girl's school, a customs building and many chapels spread around the city.
